How to Sharpen a Machete With a Knife

Machetes are cutting tools used to clear brush. Many outdoor enthusiasts carry them as a survival aide. Blades are a type of wedge that divides matter such as wood. The thinner the edge, the more effective the blade is. Sharpening a blade is the act of removing tiny particles of the edge to make it thinner. Generally, you would sharpen a machete with a wet stone or file, but if you are out in the woods and don't have access to these, you can use a knife. Iron sharpens iron as the old saying goes and this applies to steel as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the machete. Place the machete down on a flat surface such as a table so the blade hangs off the edge of the table facing you. Press the machete down with one hand to hold it in place.

    • 2

Sharpen the end of the blade. Take the knife with your free hand and press the edge of the knife against the edge of the machete at an angle. Swipe the knife blade to the right in a downward motion repeatedly.

    • 3

Sharpen the body of the blade. Go down the machete blade with the knife, covering about four inches with your swipes.

    • 4

Sharpen the other side. When you have sharpened the first side to your satisfaction, turn the machete over and sharpen that side as well.
