How to Start a Stihl BG55 Blower

Founded in Stuttgart, Germany in 1926, Stihl has transitioned from producing chain saws and tree-felling machines to an entire line of outdoor maintenance equipment. The Stihl BG 55 blower handles leaves, dust, grass clippings and other small material, blowing them away. Stihl blowers have an adjustable airflow nozzle that changes the angle and amount of air coming out, which is useful when you are trying to clean an awkward or hard-to-reach area. Starting the BG 55 is similar to starting other small, hand-held motors in that whether your motor is warm or cold makes a difference in how you start the blower.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the blower on a hard surface on the ground. Move the switch on top of the handle to the straight line position.

    • 2

Grip the handle and throttle trigger underneath the handle. Push the interlock button, the orange knob on the front side of the handle, and squeeze the trigger simultaneously. Let go of the trigger and knob to set the throttle position for starting the blower.

    • 3

Move the choke switch on the side of the blower to the slanted, parallel position, if your blower was not recently started. Move the choke to the straight, perpendicular position if you have started your blower in the last few hours.

    • 4

Push the fuel pump bulb, the rubbery bubble near the choke, no fewer than five times to ready the fuel for when the motor starts.

    • 5

Push down on the blower handle with one hand. Pull up slightly on the starter-cord handle, on the side of the blower, until you feel it catch. Pull the handle up quickly to start the motor. Pull up again if the motor doesn't start. Continue pulling the handle until the motor starts, if you recently started your blower.

    • 6

Pull the starter-cord handle until you start the motor or you reach five pulls, if you haven't started your blower recently. Move the choke to the straight, perpendicular position and continue pulling the starter cord until the motor starts or until you reach 10 pulls, if it doesn't start. Move the choke back to the slanted, parallel position and continue pulling the handle until the motor starts.

Squeeze the throttle trigger briefly once the motor starts, to slow the motor to idle speed.
