Remove any natural grass that is present in the area using a shovel. Transport the grass to a different location using a wheelbarrow.
Use your shovel to level the area upon which you are installing artificial turf. Lay your spirit level on random points to ensure that you have a smooth and level area.
Spread a layer of crushed granite over the soil and compact it in place using a cement roller. This provides a smooth surface for the artificial turf to be laid on and prevents the growth of any weeds or other plants.
Spread a fine layer of white sand to a depth of 1/4 inch to provide a level area.
Roll the artificial turf in place, using a utility knife to trim the roll down as required. Glue any seams together using artificial-turf glue, being sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions. Roll over it with the cement roller to ensure it is anchored in place.
Water the area to help bed it down.
