How to Plant Bob Sod

Bob-Sod's claim to fame is that it is the official turf of the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team. This is the turf used at Chase Field, formerly Bank One Ballpark -- for which the turf is names, where team plays. Bob-Sod is a hybrid variety of Bermuda grass. It has a finer blade and produces a denser lawn than common Bermuda grass. Bred at the University of Mississippi, Bob-Sod is best grown in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 7 through 11.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the planting area by killing any weeds or old turf with a non-selective herbicide, such as those containing glyphosate. Wait two weeks to install the sod.

    • 2

Use a rototiller to loosen the top 6 inches of soil and plow under the dead vegetation. Add 3 inches of compost and mix it in to a depth of 6 inches.

    • 3

Spread lawn starter fertilizer over the planting area, at the rate listed on the label, and mix it into the top inch of soil. Water the soil to a depth of 2 inches and allow it to sit for 24 hours.

    • 4

Use a grade rake to level the soil and then roll the area with the lawn roller to smooth it.

    • 5

Select a straight edge to be the starting point for laying the Bob-Sod. This can be the edge of the driveway or sidewalk. Place the first row of sod along this straight edge. Lay the next row of sod slightly lower than the first so that the seams do not match up. Push each piece of Bob-Sod tightly against the previous one. Use the knife to cut around corners and use the cut pieces to patch empty spots.

    • 6

Roll over the Bob-Sod with the lawn roller and then provide it with 4 inches of water. Water the Bob-Sod every day until it is established.
