Landscaping With Lavender

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, research has confirmed that lavender's scent produces a slight sedative effect when inhaled. Lavender is not only calming and attractive, but also somewhat beneficial as part of a landscape. Thanks to its variety of colors, hardy nature and easy pollination, lavender provides home and professional landscapers with a variety of planting options.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify areas in your garden or field where full sunlight strikes the ground all day and the soil drains well. Lavender thrives in sunny, dry areas.

    • 2

Plant strips of lavender in barren areas where other plants won't grow due to the dry conditions. To illuminate these dry areas, choose a shade of lavender -- purple, blue, white, pink -- that complements the surrounding landscape.

    • 3

Create colorful borders around pathways and the boundaries of a vegetable garden by planting a line of lavender flowers.

    • 4

Surround roses and other long-stem flowers with lavender, which grows close to the ground and conceals long stems with color.

    • 5

Place lavender in pots beneath small trees that provide little shade to the ground. Add potted lavender to paved areas where scent and color are needed.

    • 6

Change a landscape's texture by planting lavender where your lawn encounters low-growing flower beds.
