Grass Alternatives in South Carolina

South Carolina contains two growing zones: U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 7 and 8. If you would like to choose a grass alternative for your South Carolina yard, one of several alternatives should suit your needs and thrive in your location.
  1. Creeping Phlox

    • Quick-growing and dense, creeping phlox offers tiny flowers as well as an alternative to grass. The flowers may be blue, pink, white or violet. It is best in light to partial shade, but can tolerate full sun if kept moist.

    Purple Sheep's Burr

    • Offering an alternative to green foliage, purple sheep's burr has a purple or olive appearance. It spreads by rhizomes slowly in full sun and sandy soil. Flowers appear in early summer.

    Blue Rug Juniper

    • Blue rug juniper spreads about 6 to 12 inches per year and offers texture and height as well, standing 1 foot tall in its mature state. Although it tolerates many soil types and conditions, blue rug juniper thrives best in well-drained soil.
