How to Grow Your Own Ponderosa Pine

Mature ponderosa pines can grow 180 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet in diameter. Growing this large tree is not difficult in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 3 through 7. The ponderosa pine has orange-brown bark and yellowish-green needles that grow in clusters of three.

Instructions

    • 1

Sow the seeds during early spring months. Select a cleared area with full sun. Competition from other plants may affect its growth. An average annual rainfall of 11 to 24 inches is best for this type of pine.

    • 2

Water the seedling only during extreme droughts. Ponderosa pines tolerate drought well, but the seedling's chance of survival is reduced in heavy moisture.

    • 3

Remove weeds and other competing plants from the area for the first 3 to 6 years. This allows the tree plenty of air circulation and sunlight.

    • 4

Thin the seedlings to encourage the remaining to develop larger crowns.
