How to Build a Dutch Bucket

The Dutch bucket is a hydroponic system, one of the many forms of drip systems that are mostly enclosed, except for the top of the bucket. The nutrients within the bucket are never exposed to sunlight because of the enclosure. A reservoir within the bucket is useful in case the pump fails or if the user wants to operate the bucket with a timer. Dutch buckets can either be purchased put together or made at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 7/8-inch hole in the bottom side of the bucket, using the hole saw, around 1 inch from the bottom of the bucket.

    • 2

Place the male PVC pipe adaptor on the inside; attach the female PVC pipe adaptor on the outside. Glue both parts of PVC pipe together once connected in the middle.

    • 3

Attach the elbows onto both ends of the female and male parts. The elbows should point downward. Attach them using the glue.

    • 4

Place the landscape cloth over the opening of the inside drain elbow to use as a filter. Use the glue to secure it.

    • 5

Fill the bucket with cypress mulch and plant it. You can then connect the bucket up to the sprinkler system.
