How to Increase the Growth of Moss

If you have a walkway or garden wall that has some moss on it, you may want to increase the amount of moss on its surfaces. Moss can add a nice bit of color to the area, and it is virtually a maintenance-free plant. With proper humidity, moss can grow rather quickly and easily. Even if your region isn't particularly humid, as long as you spray a fine mist of water on the moss while it is becoming established during the first few weeks, it should grow without much trouble.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the location where you want more moss growth. Typically, moss grows best in shady areas or at least partial shade. Avoid growing trying to grow more moss in areas that will grow out toward areas that receive direct sunlight for most of the day.

    • 2

Acquire some moss. Rather than try to get the existing moss to spread, you'll apply more moss to the areas you want to fill. Look in the woods or purchase some moss from a garden supply center. You will need enough moss to fill the inside of a blender.

    • 3

Pour 2 cups of water in a blender. Add 2 cups of buttermilk.

    • 4

Add broken-up pieces of moss to the buttermilk mixture. Clean as much dirt off the underside of the moss as you can before adding it to the blender. Stuff the blender until the moss is at the very top.

    • 5

Place the lid on the blender. Blend the contents of the blender until it has a thick milkshakelike consistency.

    • 6

Take the blender to the area where you want more moss growth. Slowly pour the mixture onto the surfaces. If you have existing moss already growing, you can pour the mixture right next to it so the moss will cover the entire area. You can also apply the mixture to the surfaces with a paintbrush if you wish.

    • 7

Pour the mixture directly on areas of existing moss where the growth is patchy. Fill in the gaps between areas of moss with the mixture. Moss will now grow in all of the areas, giving you complete coverage.

    • 8

Fill a spray bottle with water. Adjust the nozzle so that the water shoots as a fine mist. Mist the moss you've applied lightly every day or two for the first two weeks. Don't soak the moss, but keep it moist for quick and maximum growth.
