DIY Grass Driveways

Give your driveway an organic, natural look by lining it with grass instead of concrete or asphalt. Sowed directly into the ground, grass will not withstand vehicular use. Instead, sow grass into a network of honeycomb-like paving stones, known as grass pavers. Grass pavers provide a solid substrate for the turf, prevent soil erosion and promote water drainage. Choose concrete rather than plastic grass pavers, especially for high-use driveways. Grass pavers come in small, incremental units and are installable without concrete or mortar.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig out the driveway plot to a depth of 6 inches. Rake the bottom to level the soil. Compact the soil at the bottom using a hand tamper or a plate compactor.

    • 2

Fill the plot with 3/4 to 1 inch of crushed rock. Rake to level the crushed rock. Compact the layer.

    • 3

Lay the grass paving stones one by one in a grid-like fashion until the plot is completely paved. During installation, regularly check for evenness by placing a level across the tops of multiple stones. Adjust for evenness, when necessary, by subtracting or adding gravel.

    • 4

Scatter a thin covering of sand over the pavers. Sweep the sand into the paver openings so they are partially filled. Fill the paver openings the rest of the way with soil.

    • 5

Sow grass into the soil. Either unroll sod or scatter grass seed over the pavers.
