Sod can give your yard a fresh, green appearance without going through the struggle of trying to cultivate an even lawn by growing grass from seeds. However, if you want to put sod down on your property, you have to figure out how much sod you need to cover your yard. An accurate sod order saves money as you do not order too much, and time, as you order enough, so do not have to reorder when you run out of sod.

  Calculate the square footage of your yard. You will need to measure the length and the width of your yard and then multiply the length by the width to equal the total measurement in square feet.

  Determine how many square feet of sod are in each pallet. Most sod retailers sell their sod in pallets that contain approximately 500 square feet of sod. If you plan on getting your sod from a specific retailer, you need to call them and ask specifically how many square feet of sod are in each one of their pallets.

  Divide the size of your yard in square feet by the number of square feet of sod in each pallet to determine how many pallets of sod you need to cover your yard. For example, if your yard measures 2,000 square feet and each pallet of sod contains 500 square feet, you can divide 2,000 by 500 to tell you that you need four pallets of sod. If your sod does not divide evenly, you have to get an extra pallet and you may have leftover sod.
