Landscaping Ideas to Separate a Yard With the Neighbors

While a community is made up of neighbors, and families who live close to each other can socialize and let their kids play together, sometimes a little privacy is nice. The type of privacy divider will vary, depending on a homeowner's needs and her aesthetic preference.
  1. Fences

    • Homeowners can put up a fence around their property to separate themselves from their neighbors. An opportunity is available for individuals to put up a wooden fence, chain-link fence or stone fence. Fences are easier to put up than more natural dividers and less expensive. Putting up a fence separates a homeowner's property from his neighbor's but doesn't completely seclude him.

    Trees

    • While trees improve the aesthetics of a property and separate neighbors from one another, they come with all sorts of issues. For example, shade provided by trees may block the sun, which can affect gardens and individuals who want to tan. Also, branches and trees can fall down and cause damage during severe thunderstorms. The branches from trees may grow onto a neighbor's property, which may cause some issues if they become an inconvenience.

    Shrubs

    • Shrubs are a living divider and may be a nice alternative to installing a fence. Numerous shrub options are available, and homeowners can choose a plant based on its color, aesthetics, size and maintenance. However, even the lowest-maintenance shrubs will require some pruning and maintenance. Shrubs are also not subjected to local zoning laws and do a better job of reducing noise pollution between neighbors.

    Walls

    • Though putting up a wall may seem a little extreme for many homeowners, it does provide an element of security that other dividers don't achieve. The height of a wall will vary depending on individual preference or privacy concerns. Walls may be ideal for backyards with swimming pools or spas and address security concerns in high-end neighborhoods, not only from neighbors, but also from intruders in general.
