How to Shape Sod

Installing sod yourself is not difficult, and you'll save a bundle of money on a professional installation. Just remember to roll the sod out evenly so the ends butt up against each other without overlapping. Use a staggered brick pattern and trim the sod to fit neatly around trees, flower beds and sprinkler heads. Set a piece of plywood on the sod to kneel on when you cut it so you don't damage it and stay off it as much as possible for the first two weeks.

Things You'll Need

Lay the sod in place, starting on a straightedge, such as a driveway or walkway. Beginning on a straightedge will help keep the sod in line.

Shape long expanses of sod, such as around a gently curving flower bed, by cutting the sod with a square-edged shovel. Make vertical cuts into the sod to shape it. Then lift the sod remnants by hand and discard or compost them.
