How to Grow Epimedium Sagittatum

Epimedium Sagittatum, better known as Horny Goat Weed, is a part of a genus of plants with heart-shaped leaves and small blooms. The leaves of Epimedium Sagittatum change from green to pink or bronze in the fall. Because of its notable ability to grow in dark, dry shade, Epimedium is cultivated in gardens and on lawns as a ground cover. Epimedium Sagittatum grows in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 4 through 8.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a location to plant your Epimedium Sagittatum. An ideal location will feature partial shade, semimoist soil and shelter from winds.

    • 2

Till the soil where you intend to place the plant. Use a spade to dig up the soil and then crumble the soil in your hands. Mix an organic, slow-release fertilizer or compost into the soil.

    • 3

Dig a hole in the location where you wish to put the plant. The hole should be as deep as the container where the plant is currently potted.

    • 4

Squish the sides of the container holding the plant, using your hands. Do this gently to dislodge the soil from the sides of the pot. Turn the container upside down with one hand while sheltering the top of the soil with your other hand. Allow the plant and soil to slide into your open hand.

    • 5

Place the roots of the plant into the ground where you dug the hole. Cover the top and sides of the hole with the tilled soil from the ground and pat it firm.

    • 6

Water your Epimedium Sagittatum every few days for the first month, then gradually decrease your watering cycle. Once the plant is established, you shouldn't need to water it unless the weather becomes very dry.
