How to Feed Hostas

Lush and healthy hostas create a breathtaking display with their vibrant foliage. They go well in any flower bed, around trees or in planters. When it comes to taking care of and feeding hostas, you cannot go wrong with alfalfa tea. The tea feeds the soil by supporting the organisms that convert nutrients into forms available to plants. Follow the instruction below to brew the tea for an easy and an inexpensive way to feed hostas.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy alfalfa pellets from your local nursery or feed store. Alfalfa contains a growth hormone called triacontanol and the nutrients required to feed the hostas. You need about 12 cups to make a barrel of tea.

    • 2

Add the alfalfa pellets and the manure in the garbage can. Fill the can nearly to the top with water and stir.

    • 3

Cover the can and let it sit for at least three days. Stir again after three days and close the can. Let it sit for another three days.

    • 4

Look for a green fermented foamy solution. The tea is now ready and can be fed to the hostas. If the tea is not ready, stir the mixture again and let it steep for another three days.

    • 5

Fill a one-gallon bucket with the tea and pour it around the hostas. You can use the tea even if the hostas are in a flower bed with other plants, because it will not harm the other plants. Use half a gallon of the tea for a smaller area of four to five clusters of hostas. Feed the hostas every six weeks with alfalfa tea during the summer season.
