Water the soil. Allow the soil to dry so that it is just moist. Use the manual lawn edger to rough up the soil. Do this to every area of the lawn that will need grass seed.
Sow the seeds in the areas that you have prepared for the seeds. Do not over-seed the area because when the seeds germinate, they need room to start growing and the grass blades need room to spread out.
Add the starter fertilizer to the grass-seeded areas. If you use liquid fertilizer, be careful not to over-water the seeds or make them float in water. Fertilize each area and allow the seeds to start germinating.
Water the new seeds in the morning and just after dinner or about 10 hours later. You must water the seeds twice a day to keep the ground moist. In hot and dry areas, you may need to water morning, noon and at night.
Allow the seed to grow while watering the grass. After the grass is about an inch tall, you can start watering once a day, usually in the evening.
Mow the grass only after the grass is at least 2 to 3 inches high. Mowing too early will damage the grass and it could die out.
