When to Plant Mondo Grass

While some grasses merely provide ground cover, mondo grass goes far beyond utility to provide beauty to yards. The ornamental grass multiples by root separation to serve as a garden border. It thrives in most climates and does well in both sun and shade. The key to a successful planting starts with learning when to plant the grass.
  1. Location

    • Where you live plays a key role in when you should plant mondo grass. In fact, it might determine whether you should be planting it at all. In the United States, climate plays a key role in lawn and garden plans. Different climates are given a specific climate zone.

According to the website MondoGrass.com, its mondo grass varieties grow best in zone 7 but also can grow in zones 5 and 6. The yearly average minimum temperature determines the zones. Zones 7, for example, has an average low temperature each year of 0 to 10 degrees F. Consult a zone map, which can be found at several online gardening sites, for specifics about your location. Zones 5 to 7 include Iowa, Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee and Pennsylvania.

    Variety

    • Mondo grass comes in several different varieties, and the variety you choose determines when you want to plant it. In addition to a basic mondo grass, which MondoGrass.com calls "regular mondo grass", there are lily turf, border grass, dwarf mondo grass and monkey grass. Some gardeners also refer to liriope as mondo grass. The two are closely related. All varieties are hardy and can be planted almost interchangeably without any major impact to the plants.

    Planting Season

    • Mondo grass is able to handle many different growing conditions. The website AllAboutLawns.com says it is easy to plant and grows nearly year-round. As well, mondo grass grows in deep shade or full sun and is nearly immune to drought.

Given these characteristics, you can plant mondo grass throughout the year. GardenGuides.com says it grows best when planted in fall and spring. This is particularly true for plantings in hardiness Zones 5 and 6, where a late fall, winter or early spring planting might subject the plants to harsh cold temperatures. The cold isn't likely to kill the grass, but it can affect its growth and its flowering. In zone 7, plant mondo grass throughout the year. The zone's mild winters are unlikely to have a significant impact on this hardy plant. In zone 7, though, summertime plantings might require a little more water to help them mature.
