Easy Ways to Grow Grass

Growing grass can be one of the most headache-inducing endeavors a homeowner can undertake. In order for grass to grow properly, you need to plant at a certain time, water correctly and make sure the soil has the correct nutrients. There are some facts that you can use to your advantage to make the growth process easier.
  1. Picking the Right Time

    • Grass grows best in early fall. The weather during this time of year is cool enough for the grass to survive with less watering (which means less maintenance for you). Also, weeds tend not to grow during this time and will not ruin your lawn with their unsightly appearance.

    Picking the Right Grass

    • First, pick the correct seed. If you are located in the Rocky Mountains or Plains states, Kentucky bluegrass is best suited for the climate. Residents of the Northeast and Midwest should plant hard fescue. The Southeast is good for centipede grass, and the Southwest for emerald and bermuda. When you purchase your grass at a home and garden store, you can pick a quick-growing variety.

    Raking the Soil

    • Rake the soil 1/4 to 1/2 an inch deep. This will loosen up the soil and allow the grass seeds to take hold in the ground. If you do not have a rake, any other garden utensil will do as long as you are loosening the soil. Loosening up the soil is called "tilling."

    Lay Down Nutrients

    • After you have tilled the soil, lay down some nutrients. This can include Miracle Grow, nitrogen pellets and/or manure. You will need to read about the grass you are planting since each grass needs different nutrients.

    Lay Down Seeds

    • After you have placed all the nutrients you wanted in the soil, lay down the grass seeds evenly. Thereafter, place another layer of nutrients or soil to cover the seeds, and water the newly planted seeds. Now you just need to keep an eye on your lawn to make sure the soil does not dry out. When it does, it is time to water the lawn again.

    Using Sod

    • Sodding is a section of grass that has already grown and is available for purchase; it is placed directly on your property. To use this method, till the soil you are placing the sod on; lay down the sod; roll your sod with a lawn roller to ensure the roots of the grass make contact with the soi; and water when done. Purchasing sod is more expensive than growing a lawn yourself, but it is the easiest method for growing a law since most of the work is already done.
