How to Use Hay Over New Lawn Seed

Mulching newly sown grass seed with hay helps the soil retain moisture, which the new seeds need to germinate. The hay also helps protect the seed from being eaten by birds. Once applied, the hay can be left in place. By the time the grass needs to be cut, the hay will have decomposed and composted the soil.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the new seed over the soil, then rake it in to a depth of about 1/4 inch.

    • 2

Cut open the hay bale with a utility knife if the bindings are twine; use wire cutters if the binding is wire.

    • 3

Take handfuls of hay from the bale, then shake it out over the seeded ground. Don't pack it down. Sprinkle the hay until it is 2 to 4 inches deep.
