How to Plant a Siberian Crabapple Tree

Siberian crabapple trees are popular with gardeners and professional landscapers across the United States because of their adaptability. They are also prized for their tolerance of disease, drought and salt.
The Siberian crabapple should be planted in the early spring, after the last frost of the winter, to allow it time to establish itself before the following winter rolls around. Siberian crabapple trees can be purchased at most garden and nursery stores.
When mature, this tree can stand 20 to 30 feet tall. It is the hardiest species of the Malus genus and should be planted in a heavy, loam soil.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a location where the tree will be planted. The location should be in an area of your yard that gets full sun and that also has well-drained soil.

    • 2

Use your shovel to dig a hole that is three to four times the diameter and depth of the tree's root ball. If the tree is in a container, dig a hole that is three to four times the diameter and depth of the container.

    • 3

If the tree is in a container, remove it by loosening the soil around the edges with your shovel. Be careful not to break up the root ball. If your tree is not in a container, loosen the wrapping the covers the root ball.

    • 4

Place the tree in the center of the hole with its best side facing forward.

    • 5

Fill the hole with soil. Use your shovel to pat it down.

    • 6

Mulch with a 3-inch layer of pine straw, compost, or pulverized bark to hold in moisture and encourage growth.
