Rake the area where you will be planting the rye seed to remove any rocks, sticks or other debris. Remove as much debris from the area as possible.
Apply fertilizer to the area where the seed will be planted. Use a high-phosphorus fertilizer and apply it only to the soil surface.
Spread the rye seed over the entire area where you want the grass to grow. You can spread the seed by hand, but a hand caster or a wheeled seed spreader may help you spread it more evenly.
Rake lightly over the area where the seeds have been spread. Only the top layer of soil---about 1/8 inch deep---needs to be raked.
Roll over the soil where the seed was spread with a lawn roller so the seed is pushed down into the soil and is better able to germinate and grow.
Water the new seed thoroughly with a hose. Use a gentle stream of water so the seeds are not displaced. For the first few weeks after seeding, the rye seed will need to be kept moist so it can germinate. You may need to water the area two to three times a day to keep it moist, but be careful not to over water the seed.
