Till the entire surface of the area that will be seeded with a garden tiller, which can be rented at home improvement stores. Tilling the ground uproots weeds and other plants that will compete with the grass seed. This step is not required, but is recommended to achieve the best final results for the bahiagrass lawn.

Rake the entire surface of the ground to even out the soil.

Pour the bahiagrass seeds into a seed spreader. Walk along the surface of the ground while turning the hand crank on the seed spreader to distribute the seeds along the soil. Refill the seed spreader with seeds as needed and continue walking until you have applied seed to the entire ground area.

Rake the entire surface of the ground again to press the bahiagrass seeds into the soil. It is not necessary that every seed be covered with soil, as some will still be visible on the surface. But most of them should be covered. Covering the seeds with soil hastens germination and prevents the seeds from being eaten by birds.

Water the surface of the soil deeply with a garden hose or sprinkler. The soil needs 2 to 3 inches of water initially so that the seeds stay wet enough to germinate. Continue watering twice per day until the grass seeds germinate.
