How to Reproduce Hardy Pampas Revennae Grass

Pampas revennae grass is a hardy landscaping plant that is used as an ornamental addition to landscaping. It thrives in almost every regional climate and can endure high and low temperatures ranges. Pampas grass changes from green in the summer to a light tan color in the fall months, providing interesting landscape features year-round. Reproduce pampas grass by dividing a current plant's root-ball into smaller plants and transplanting them to new growing locations. Plan to divide and transplant the grass in spring or early summer while the plant is in its full growth cycle.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the top of the pampas grass in half by pulling it apart with your hands. Work your way down the middle of the plant until you are as close to the soil as possible.

    • 2

Place the blade of a shovel into the center of the plant and insert the blade as far into the soil as possible to cut into the main root-ball. Lean back on the shovel sightly to loosen the roots of the plant.

    • 3

Remove the shovel from the soil and reinsert it into the soil across the base of the plant until the root-ball has been divided in half.

    • 4

Move to the outside of the plant on the side that you want to transplant. Insert the shovel into the soil around the outer edge of the plant to loosen the plant from the ground.

    • 5

Grasp the base of the pampas grass and pull it out of the soil with your hands. Fill in the resulting hole with extra soil to protect the root system of the main plant.

    • 6

Move the transplant to a new location and dig a hole for it. Make the hole deep enough so that the pampas grass transplant will sit at the same level in the soil that it was previously planted.

    • 7

Place the plant into the hole and cover the roots with soil.
