How to Plant Fig Trees in Florida

Fig trees are best grown in warm climates, and it is best to plant them in the beginning of the spring so that they can get established before winter. This makes them a perfect tree to plant in Florida, since the winters are mild and the warm season begins earlier. In Florida, fig trees can be planted as early as February. Fig trees grow to be fairly tall, so you should be sure that you are planting them in a region that is not too close to your house or other trees.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a hole to a depth 2 to 4 inches deeper than what the fig tree plant was grown in at the nursery. Be sure to choose a location that gets plenty of sunlight.

    • 2

Put the fig tree plant upright in the hole. Fig trees should not be planted from a seed, but rather a "baby" plant.

    • 3

Crumble the soil around the roots of the plant, then fill in the rest of the hole and gently pack it down.

    • 4

Water the plant every day until it is at least 8 feet high. By this time it will have its own root system, and will not require you to water it unless there is a long drought.
