However, there are more straightforward ways to grow grass. Seeding the grass is easier than using sod, according to the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Choose the right time to seed. Planting in the depths of winter will mean the seed will lie dormant for a few months. Planting in summer might mean it's too warm for the seeds to properly germinate. Aim for mid to late spring or very early fall. Exact timings will vary according to location. For example, mid-August to early September in Illinois, according to the University of Illinois.

Prepare your area. The fastest way to grow grass is to plant on areas where grass is already established. This is known as overseeding. Ensure to mow existing grass short before sprinkling a few seeds on the area. Don't add too many seeds or it may lead to too much competition for nutrients, according to Kansas State University.

Pull up and roots, weeds and rocks if you're trying to grow on a new area. Turn over the soil, then lay down a layer of fresh topsoil mixed with a little compost. Aim for minimum of 4 inches thick, but the thicker the better.

Spread grass seed over your poorly covered or bare patch of lawn. Choose seeds that have a very high germination percentage. This is usually listed on seed packs. High germination percentages mean that your grass is more likely to grow successfully, making it easier for you to manage. Some packs may also list percentage weed content. Select low weed content packs.

Water frequently and generously. Use a watering can for smaller areas, or set up a sprinkler for larger lawns. Try and water your patch every day. Grass should grow within a few weeks.
