How to Plant Large Areas of Grass

Adding grass to a large area can enhance the beauty and functionality of the space. Grassy areas are used for a variety of activities and can withstand being played and trod on, on a regular basis. Grass is also used as a filler for areas that are not ideal for other plants. Once established, grass can grow with little maintenance, needing only mowing and watering to stay green and healthy.

Instructions

  1. Planting Seed

    • 1

Mark area to be seeded with stakes and string to keep the area clear of activity after planting.

    • 2

Rototill the entire area to be planted to loosen soil. Use a rake to level out the ground.

    • 3

Remove any debris such as rocks, weeds or twigs. The area needs to be clear of anything other than soil.

    • 4

Spread grass seed over area using a spreader. A hand spreader or push spreader can be used depending on size of area to be seeded.

    • 5

Rake seeds into soil to a depth of 1/4 to 1/8 inch and add fertilizer over the area.

    • 6

Water deeply each day and cut lawn when the grass height reaches 2 to 2 1/2 inches.

    Planting Sod

    • 7

Prepare the ground as you would for seed.

    • 8

Water soil so that the ground is moist but not muddy.

    • 9

Lay sod in a straight line starting with the first row. Push pieces together to minimize gaps, and stagger the rows so that the joints are in different locations.

    • 10

Water deeply each day for a week, then every other day to allow the roots to grow into the soil. Mow after three to four weeks.
