When it's first planted, new grass seed requires careful attention and constant watering. Grass seeds are much cheaper than sod, but newly seeded grass roots are shallow, so you will need to take extra care when it comes time for the first cutting. Before you mow your grass seed for the first time, wait until the new grass is approximately one-third higher than its usual cutting height--approximately 3 to 4 inches tall.

1
Set the blade height on your lawn mower to 2 1/2 to 3 inches high and make sure the blade is sharp.
-
2
Cut the newly seeded grass by moving the mower slowly across the grass. Be particularly careful when mowing corners; these areas of new grass are sensitive and may be uprooted easily.
