Tropical Plants for Arizona

Landscaping in Arizona may seem difficult because of the dry-desert conditions. In reality, there are many plants that can be used to provide your front yard or backyard with a tropical feel. Some can be used as hedging to provide privacy while others can be used to add color and depth to your already existing landscape. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, Arizona is in Hardiness Plan Zone 6a and 6b. Plants that are listed to grow in this zone will work well for your landscape.
  1. Heavenly Bamboo

    • Use the heavenly bamboo for a shrub, border or in a rock garden. This plant will grow anywhere from 72 inches to 120 inches tall with a spread of 12 inches to 36 inches. The heavenly bamboo will bloom with white flowers in early, mid- and late spring. It offers green and purple leaves and requires partial shade to full sun. The heavenly bamboo will also attract birds to your garden.

    Evening Primrose

    • Use evening primrose as a ground cover or use it in your rock garden. This plant will grow in clay, neutral, sandy and well-drained soils. During the early and mid-summer season, you will notice pink, fragrant blooms. The evening primrose is also named the Gumbo Lily and Cowboy Primrose. This North American native plant will reach 6 inches to 10 inches tall and requires full sun.

    Summer Sweet

    • This plant offers white blooms with green leaves during the spring season. Its height will reach 120 inches to 180 inches with a spread of the same size. It requires shade to full sun for growth. It does need a lot of water and will grow in acidic, clay, neutral, sandy and well-drained soils. The summer sweet plant is normally used for a natural privacy fence or border but does grow slowly.
