How to Plant and Grow Zoysia Grass Plugs

Zoysia grass is a warm season turf grass native to areas of Asia and hardy to plant in USDA zones 8 through 11. The grass grows and spreads quickly to form a durable sod since this variety has both stolons and a rhizome root structure. Plant a zoysia grass lawn with plugs during the spring season once there is no longer a risk of frost. Plugs are 1-inch sections of sod that are lower in cost to install than a full sod lawn.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the planting area by removing all weeds, rocks and debris. Till the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches and smooth it with a rake. Compact the soil by rolling it with a lawn roller filled with water for weight.

    • 2

Dig 2-inch-deep rows set at a distance of 6 to 12 inches apart across the entire lawn area. Plugs set farther apart will take longer to establish a full lawn. Add a layer of organic compost to the bottom of the rows.

    • 3

Set the plugs into the hole so the root system is covered. Space the plugs at a distance of 6 to 12 inches apart depending on the number of plugs available. Fill the soil around the plug roots and tamp to hold in place.

Apply a 1-2-1 grass fertilizer after planting to stimulate root establishment and spread growth. Follow the package instructions for the application rate based on the square feet of planting.

    • 5

Water the plugs with a sprinkler system to soak the soil to a depth of 4 to 6 inches immediately after planting. Continue to provide water on a daily basis until the roots establish and being to spread. Do not create standing water around the plugs.
