How to Calculate Lawn Sod Area

All sod is sold by the square yard and is delivered on pallets that contain 50 square yards of sod rolls. One square yard is equal to 9 square feet or a square 3 feet wide by 3 feet long. Different types of sod turf grass will range greatly in price. Accurately measuring and then calculating what is required for laying that sod will likely wind up saving you money.

  Make a rough sketch with pencil and paper of the layout of your yard. Include growing beds, sidewalks or any other landscape structures that will not receive the sod. These landmarks will aid you in measuring the area that will be receiving the new sod lawn.

  Measure the overall width and length of the lawn area. In curved portions of the yard, attempt to break down the circular areas into small squares or rectangles with separate measurements.

  Multiply the separate width and length measurements of each measured square or rectangle. You may have a number of small squares or rectangles on the lay out sketch sheet. Calculate each small square or rectangle one at a time. The final results will be in square feet.

  Add all of the square footage calculations together for a final result.

  Divide that final result by 9 square feet, to get a final number in square yards.

  Divide the square yard measurement by 50, if applicable, for the amount of sod rolls stacked on a pallet. The result will give you the number of sod pallets to get.
