Use a garden pick, rake or your hands to remove any rocks or debris in the soil.
Sprinkle a fertilizer with a high phosphorus count over the entire soil area. Rake over the soil several times to blend in the fertilizer.
Use a shovel or your hands to pat down the soil and create a smooth surface for laying the sod.
Press the first pallet of sod into the soil starting against a solid line, such as the driveway or a sidewalk.
Slightly overlap the beginning of the second pallet with the end of the first pallet. Use your hands to press the two ends together to prevent an obvious seam from forming. Repeat until you reach the end of the yard.
Place the second row of sod so that the seams stagger with the first row, creating a look like layered bricks. Repeat throughout the rest of the yard.
Run a rake lightly over the entire yard to remove any air pockets and help the sod bond with the soil.
Sprinkler fertilizer over the entire lawn following the manufacture's directions for new lawns.
Use a garden hose with a sprinkler attachment to water the lawn. Soak each pallet of sod thoroughly.
Water the lawn again twice a day for 10 to 14 days after installing the sod.
