Can I Plant Grass Seeds in February?

Temperature is more important than the month, when it comes to sowing grass seeds. Depending upon where you live and what type of grass you are planting, February may be either the exact wrong time or the exact right time to plant.
  1. Growing Season

    • The beginning of the growing season is the best time to plant. Warm weather grasses like Bermuda and Saint Augustine have only one growing season, the summer. Cool weather grasses like fescue and bluegrass have two growing seasons, spring and fall.

    Temperature

    • Cool season grasses should be planted when there is no danger of the air temperature dipping below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, and warm season grasses cannot tolerate temperatures below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. If you live in a warm climate, your February temperature may be warm enough to sustain grass seed, though it may take up to four weeks to germinate.

    Other Factors

    • Cool season grasses do not do well at high temperatures, so in a warm climate, a February sowing will give them time to become established before the heat of the summer. February is the middle of the dry season in most areas, so provide consistent, light watering to your new seed.
