Instructions

    • 1

Consider the cultivation requirements of your ornamental grass when choosing a planting location in your home landscape. Keep in mind that most types of ornamental grasses grow best when planted in an area that receives three to five hours of bright, direct sunlight each day. Look for a location that also provides loose, well-draining soil.

    • 2

Clear the planting area of all existing vegetation. Dig up the roots of perennial plants and weeds to prevent them from growing back. Remove existing vegetation to prevent unwanted plants from diverting moisture and nutrients from the ornamental grass.

    • 3

Till a slow-release 10-10-10 fertilizer into the soil before broadcasting the ornamental grass seed. Use 1/2 lb. of fertilizer per 50 square feet of planting area. Work the fertilizer into the top four inches of soil.

    • 4

Broadcast the packet of ornamental grass seed over the prepared location. Distribute the seeds over the area as evenly as possible. Go over the area with a hand rake to ensure the seeds are covered with about 1/4 inch of soil.

    • 5

Water the area lightly to encourage the ornamental grass seeds to germinate. Provide just enough water to moisten the soil to depth of about 1 inch.

    • 6

Cover the planting area with a 1-inch layer of straw to conserve soil moisture and prevent the ornamental grass seed from blowing away. Remove the straw in a week or two, when the grass starts to grow.
