Grass Sod Installation Specifications

Sod is a great way to establish a new lawn because it gives you an instant lawn. Most sod is a blend of Kentucky bluegrass varieties or a combination of other common turfgrass species such as ryegrass or fescue.
  1. Preparing the Yard

    • Loosen the soil with a rototiller, to a depth of 4 to 6 inches. Spread a starter fertilizer to ensure the sod is healthy. Apply a blend that has a lot of phosphorus. Look for a 2-1-1 ratio. Water the yard.

    Installation

    • Start with full strips along the borders of the yard. Lay each piece as close to its neighbor as possible. Make your way across the yard to the other side. If you have to use small pieces, put them in the center so they are surrounded by larger ones. If you have an irregular border, put down a larger piece of sod and trim away the excess.

    Care After Planting

    • Run a one-third full roller over the new sod. Give the grass a deep soaking to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Do not mow until the sod roots are established. You can check by trying to lift up the piece of sod. If it will not lift, you can mow.
