Early spring is the best time to plant grass seed in Pennsylvania. Once the frost is over, the seed can germinate and grow strong roots. April is ideal, but seed also can be sowed in March or May, depending on how warm or cool the spring is.
Plant cool-season grasses in the late summer or early fall, before the frost sets in. August 15 to September 15 is the window to shoot for. In Western Pennsylvania, it's important to sow the seed no later than 90 days before the first frost is expected.
Take the soil temperature. Warm-season grass seed does well in soil that is between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Cool-season grass can be sown in cooler temperatures of 50 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
