How Long Until You See Growth from Seeded Grass?

Time Frame

• Plant rye grass for the fastest growth. It germinates in five to 10 days. Fescue grass is the next best, germinating in an average of seven to 15 days. If you sow bentgrass and bermuda grass, expect it to take 10 days or more to sprout. Buffalo grass and centipede grass sprout in two to four weeks, and bluegrass is the slowest to root, taking up to one month.

Significance

• Choose a grass seed with a higher germination rate. This rate determines how many seeds will sprout and how many will be inactive, as tested in a laboratory. The preferred rate is 90 to 95 percent, but some varieties will be closer to the 80 percent range.

Testing

• Spread seeds in a plant pot to test how fast you will see growth. Expect the seeds to germinate a few days before your lawn would, because the test soil is warmer.
