Products to Kill Moss

The dense, green carpet-like growth known as moss may appear in your lawn if the area is constantly moist and shaded, warns Washington State University. It can ruin the appearance of your lawn and compete against your grass for nutrients and space. Several lawn treatment products can help you quickly kill the moss.
  1. Safer Brand Moss and Algae Killer

    • Safer Brand's moss killer spray comes recommended by Clemson University Extension. The university says it works by using all-natural potassium salts of fatty acids, making this spray safe for organic gardens. Not only will it kill moss, but it will kill other kinds of growths like algae, lichen and liverwort.

Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Fertilizer with Moss Control

    • Ontario's Ministry of the Environment suggests using Scott's lawn fertilizer with built-in moss control. This product is ideal if you want to enhance the health of your grass, thus making it thicker and less susceptible to moss invasions, while simultaneously treating any current moss problems. Its active moss-killing ingredient is ferrous sulfate monohydrate, also known as iron. The iron is toxic to moss, without harming the grass.

    Moss-Out

    • Both Oregon State University and Washington State University advise using Moss-Out to treat moss problems in your lawn and elsewhere on your property. The Moss-Out company provides granular products and sprays designed for lawns, structures and walkways. All of the products use iron to naturally kill the moss.

Garden Safe Moss and Algae Killer Concentrate

    • Garden Safe's moss-killing spray also comes highlighted by Clemson University. It helps control and kill moss and algae. Unlike most moss killers, it is safe to use on multiple surfaces, including lawns and walkways. The formulation relies on potassium salts, according to the university, so it won't leave behind any staining residue.
