Inexpensive Shrubs & Yard Plants

Landscaping with shrubs and yard plants can add beauty and value to your property. Fortunately, shrubs don't have to cost a fortune either. Though shrubs and perennial yard plants tend to be pricier than annual flowers, they last much longer so are a better value in the long run.
  1. Lilac

    • Lilac bushes are very hearty and bloom quite easily. Best of all, these pretty green bushes with purple flowers are very cheap. A medium-sized California lilac bush, for example, may cost only $10 to 15. Lilacs can survive with just water and sunlight, so they do not require a lot of gardening upkeep.

    Hydrangea

    • Hydrangeas are not only inexpensive, they are beautifully colorful. Hydrangeas generally produce blue, pink or purple flowers, depending on the variety. These shrubs can do well even in colder climates, so they are very popular for landscaping. Though originally bred in Japan, hydrangeas are now extremely common in the United States.

    Yucca Plant

    • Yucca plants come in several varieties and are cheap to purchase. One of the best features of a yucca is that it maintains foliage all year long. For that reason, yuccas are popular in colder areas. The adam's needle variety of the yucca plant is recommended by the Christian Science Monitor for its color.

    Rose Bush

    • Rose bushes are very hearty, fairly inexpensive, and stunningly beautiful when used for landscaping. Two varieties in particular---knockout roses and flower carpet roses---are cheap and make great border plants. Roses don't require a lot of care and management.

    Privet

    • Privets are classic green shrubs that present pretty white flowers. They do require lots of water and sunlight to survive. They make great hedge shrubs but need to be trimmed regularly when serving this purpose. Some privet varieties do well in colder climates, while others work best in warmer areas.
