When to Plant Grass in Michigan

In the USDA hardiness zone map, Michigan ranges from zone 6 in the south to zone 3 in areas of the Upper Peninsula. The best types of grass to grow in Michigan are cool-season grasses.
  1. After Cultivating

    • According to the Michigan State University Extension Services, it is most effective to plant new grass seed in Michigan in either the spring or fall, after cultivating the soil, with the fall being the best time.

    Two Seasons of Growth

    • Planting grass in the fall in Michigan has the advantage of moderate temperatures. Weeds and pests are less active at that time and the soil has sufficient moisture. Grass planted in the fall can grow through two seasons before the heat of the next summer. This allows the grass to establish itself with a good root system.

    Types of Grass to Plant

    • Fescue, ryegrass and bluegrass are cool-season grasses that do well in all Michigan climate zones. Bluegrass is the most commonly planted grass for lawns, parks and athletic fields.
