How to Identify Types of Banana Plants

Different types of banana plants and trees produce different types of bananas. When tasting these bananas, you might be surprised at just how different they are. There are a few key factors to consider when learning how to identify different types of banana plants.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider how cold the climate is that the banana plant is growing in. The Basjoo banana plant can grow in temperatures as low as negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit, yet the plant is still tropical in appearance.

    • 2

Look at the bananas' color. The Blur Java banana plant produces bananas that are a silvery blue color. This plant also has large leaves and produces long bananas.

    • 3

Measure the height of the banana plant to identify it. Unlike other types, the Dwarf Cavendish banana plant will only grow to be 6 feet tall. It also has leaves that are reddish in color.

    • 4

Pay attention to the length of the banana the plant produces. Lady Finger plants produce smaller-than-average bananas, which are only about 4 inches long. The diameter of the bananas produced is only about 1 inch.

    • 5

Taste the banana to differentiate the Apple banana plant from the Lady Finger. Apple banana has an aftertaste similar to the taste of a ripe apple.
