Overseeding with Kentucky Bluegrass

Overseeding a Kentucky bluegrass lawn can fill out any thin spots that have developed in the lawn. Overseeded Kentucky bluegrass requires protection from weeds and plenty of moisture to take root properly.
  1. Schedule

    • Landscapers generally overseed Kentucky bluegrass either in the spring or in the fall. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln lists April and September as the best months for overseeding this particular grass. Ohio State University adds that bluegrass overseeded in November or December will germinate in the spring.

    Process

    • Apply Kentucky bluegrass seed at a concentration of about 1 lb. for every square foot of soil, according to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Mixing the seed with suitable filler materials such as organic fertilizer, sand or sawdust helps ensure more even application of seed.

    Maintenance

    • Overseeded Kentucky bluegrass requires moist soil so the seeds can germinate successfully. Plan to apply 1 inch of water to the seedlings in the spring and fall months, increasing the amount to 1.5 inches in the summer. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln also recommends using an herbicide called Siduron to keep weeds from interfering with the seedlings' germination.
