How to Boil Blackberries & Sugar for a Blackberry Cobbler

A down-home dessert that pairs deliciously with vanilla ice cream, blackberry cobbler is easy to make at home. It only requires a few ingredients and bakes up nicely in less than an hour in a conventional oven. Making the blackberry filling for homemade cobbler involves boiling down fresh berries and sugar. You can complete the process in 20 minutes, even if you are a novice cook. It's also a cost friendly alternative to purchasing premixed berry compotes.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 lb. blackberries (rinsed and defoliated)
  • 3 cups white granulated sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 4 qt. pot
  • Wooden spoon

Instructions

    • 1

Add the rinsed and defoliated blackberries to the pot. Pour the water into the pot afterward.

    • 2

Sift the sugar over the entire surface of the floating blackberries. Turn on the stove to a medium-high setting--325 degrees F on a digital stove.

    • 3

Cover the pot and allow the berries and sugar to boil for 10 minutes.

    • 4

Reduce the heat to a low simmer and remove the lid. Mash the berries into the thickening, purple-black sauce with the potato masher. Mash firmly, breaking the berries into the sauce for about 30 seconds. Leave some of the berries intact.

    • 5

Stir the berries as they simmer for an additional 10 minutes. Remove the pot from the stove and set it aside for use in your cobbler recipe.
