How to Mount Tillandsias

Tillandsias or air plants are the multi-colored plants that grow anywhere except in soil. They were originally discovered in the heavy underbrush or jungles. These hardy plants can be a very colorful addition to your rock garden, terrarium, near a patio or anywhere you cannot get pretty flowers to grow due to lack of full sunlight or poor soil. Strangely, the only matter that Tillandsias will not grow in is soil.

Instructions

    • 1

Select an area where you want to place your Tillandsias. If you have a rock garden you can put some on the rocks or if you want it to look like a regular plant, just put it in a planter box.

    • 2

Fill a planter box or flowerpot with gravel or pebbles and place the pieces of Tillandsias into the pebbles.

    • 3

Attach the plants by placing a drop of white glue onto the bottom of the plant and fasten it to rocks in a rock garden or terrarium.

    • 4

Hang a length of fishing or florist's wire from a hook in your kitchen or any area where there is some light coming in. Loop the plant around the wire and simply let it grow.

    • 5

Soak driftwood or other items from saltwater to remove the salt and lay the Tillandsias on them just draping them over.

    • 6

Look for different color Tillandsias and mix them up. They need to be sprayed with a mist once a week, but they should dry out completely in between watering, so if your plants are still a bit damp, do not water them.
