Information on Centipede Grass

Centipede grass is a common grass type for home lawns. Introduced to the United States from Southeast Asia, centipede grass grows well in central and northern Florida. The grass grows slow, although it does not require high maintenance.
  1. Timeline

    • Centipede lawns come from both traditional seeding and sod farms. While seeding lawns is preferable from April to July, laying sod goes from February to November, although late spring to early fall is preferable.

    Disadvantages

    • Excessive thatch, heavy shade or low-potassium soils are negative factors for centipede grass. Continual loss or brown patches of centipede grass may need reseeding, although it can also indicate that this grass type does not grow well in your area.

    Considerations

    • Proper maintenance can help improve centipede grass turf. Mowing the grass to two inches in height, watering the lawn about three-quarters per time and removing excess thatch can prevent centipede grass decline.
