When to Plant Bermuda Grass in Central Texas

In Texas, it is common to experience periods of drought and intense heat during the summer and fall months. These two factors can wreak havoc on the appearance of grass. Bermuda grass is a common grass in Texas because of its ability to survive during these unfavorable conditions.
  1. Hulled Bermuda Seed

    • If Bermuda grass is left uncut it will develop seeds.

Bermuda grass seed that has had the protective seed hull removed is best for spring and summer planting or broadcasting. With the shell removed, the seed is able to germinate faster. Hulled Bermuda seeds will have a dark brown color.

    Unhulled Bermuda Seed

    • Unhulled Bermuda can be planted with winter rye in areas that have erosion.

Unhulled Bermuda still has the protective shell covering the delicate seeds. It is best to sow the unhulled variety during the fall. This gives the seed all winter to shed its coating and prepare for spring germination. With the hull still intact, these tiny seeds will have a tan color.

    Bermuda Sod

    • Fresh sod is perishable and should be placed soon after being cut.

The best time to lay Bermuda sod is in the spring or summer during the active growing season. Fresh sod should be watered daily for the first 10 days to ensure that the new roots do not dry out. If the sod becomes too dry the grass will die.
