When to Plant Fescue Grass in Georgia

Tall fescue is one of many grasses planted on Georgia lawns. While not well-suited to all areas of the state, fescue is useful in many areas of Georgia. If planted at the right time, it can help your lawn stay green all year.
  1. Uses

    • Tall fescue is a cool-season grass. It is easy to establish from seed and is often used to supplement warm-season grasses on lawns. While warm-season grasses often turn brown in fall and winter, fescue looks green and healthy.

    Planting

    • You can plant fescue in early spring or early fall, at the beginning of either of its two annual growth cycles. Late August to early September is generally considered to be the best time for planting.

    Location

    • Tall fescue is frequently planted in the Upper Piedmont region of Georgia, where the climate is better suited for it. Areas south of Atlanta are too hot for this particular grass to thrive.
