Sod Over Dead Grass

Sod is one way for homeowners to get rid of the dead grass and have a green lawn. The soil must be prepared before the sod can be laid correctly and grow.
  1. Soil Preparation

    • Weeds, rocks, debris and dead grass must be removed from the soil before sod can be laid. Dead grass or other debris will prevent the sod roots from establishing themselves.

    Establishing Root Systems

    • The roots of the sod grow into the soil. When dead grass is present, the roots do not have enough room to grow and become established. This can cause the sod to die back or the soil will not have a firm hold in the soil and will lift up easily when mowed or raked.

    Tip

    • Prepare the soil before purchasing the new sod. Rolled up sod left on a pallet for longer than one to two days will dry out and start turning brown.
