At What Temperatures Can You Lay Sod?

Sod provides an instant green lawn as long as receives proper care and you plant it at the correct time. Plant sod anytime during the year when the soil is not frozen.
  1. Spring

    • Planting sod in spring when temperatures are cooler allows the sod enough time to develop a strong root system with less watering than when temperatures are hotter. You can water the sod once a day or if the spring months bring enough rain, the sod will have natural irrigation.

    Summer

    • Although you can plant sod in summer, the hot temperatures will make it harder to keep the sod moist so the root system can develop. The sod will need watering twice a day for the first week and once a day thereafter.

    Fall

    • Early fall is a good time to lay sod. The temperatures are cooler and less water is necessary to keep the sod and soil underneath moist. Water the sod once a day for the first week and every few days thereafter.
