The Best Way to Lay Sod

Sod must be laid correctly for the roots to grow down into the soil and become established. After the sod is correctly laid, you will not be able to see any seams and the pieces of sod will be straight.
  1. Start

    • The first piece of sod must be laid correctly if the rest of the sod pieces and rows are growing to fit together correctly. Lay the sod tightly against a straight edge such as a concrete slab. If there is no straight edge, one is made with string tied to posts in a straight line.

    Butting Sod

    • Sod ends and sides are butted (pushed up against each other tightly) together with your hand so that there are no seams showing. When the sod is completely installed, you will not be able to see any seams.

    Finish

    • A drum roller filled with water is used to tamp down the sod so there are no air pockets between the sod roots and the soil. The sod will be flush against the soil so the roots can grow downward into the soil and become established.
