Can Sod Be Laid on Top of Existing Grass?

Sod allows homeowners to have a green lawn right away without waiting for grass seed to grow. Before sod can be laid, soil must be prepared properly so the new sod can develop a strong root system.
  1. Soil

    • Grass, weeds, rocks and debris must be removed from the soil in preparation of laying sod. Sod roots need to be able to grow into the soil below without any obstructions that could prevent the root development needed to keep the sod green and help it become established.

    Root Establishment

    • When sod is watered, the roots and blades of grass start growing. Roots grow downwards into the soil and the blades of grass grow taller. As the blades of grass grow taller, the sod becomes established in the ground below and will not lift up during mowing.

    Tips

    • Prepare the soil by removing old grass and adding the starter fertilizer before having the sod delivered. Sod should not be left to sit for more than one to two days without being laid or it can start to turn brown and die back.
